‘I Love Coffee’, Findon High School’s Enterprise Education Initiative
‘I Love Coffee’ is an enterprise education initiative at Findon High School and provides students a ‘taste of employment’ in a small-scale café. Students who express an interest in developing employability skills in retail, hospitality or business operations are encouraged to apply for a role and when successful are fully trained in Level 1 Barista through an accredited provider. They then receive further on-the job’ training in all areas of business operation, including our weekly coffee morning which serves the school and broader community.
Students are remunerated for the work in the form of further training or ‘school-bonuses’ such as canteen vouchers and once they have gained sufficient experience participate in a ‘Recognition of Community Service’ interview, earning 10 SACE Stage 1 credits. Students of any age can apply for work at ‘I Love Coffee’, however Year 8 completion is a basic requirement.
Being part of the ‘I Love Coffee’ team gives young people an advantage when applying for casual employment, with many of our past Baristas now working in the hospitality or retail industry as a direct result of their experience.
The enterprise is an important part of our school culture with many staff now regulars to our coffee morning; they enjoy not only the quality hot drinks served, but also the warm welcome they receive as they place their order.
